An AI-Powered E-Learning Platform for Coaches and Students
A custom e-learning platform built for an education client serving the Kenyan market, where many learners are studying in English as a second or third language. Coaches create course content with AI assistance, manage their own lessons and materials, run live virtual classes and set quizzes from a single dashboard. Students get one simple portal for lessons, live classes, quizzes, assignments and results, designed so that the software never becomes an extra barrier between the learner and the lesson.

The Challenge
Kenya's official languages are English and Kiswahili. English is the language of the classroom, but for a great many learners it is not the language of home, and the gap between the two is where students get lost. Our client's coaches were teaching English to exactly those students, and the tools they had were working against them.
Lesson content took days to write, because every explanation had to be pitched carefully at a learner who was decoding the language at the same time as the idea. Materials lived in documents, videos and chat groups with no structure a student could follow on their own. Live sessions were arranged by sharing links, and quizzes were marked by hand. Every part of teaching that was not actually teaching was eating the coaches' time.
The students had a harder version of the same problem. A learner already working hard to follow English does not need an application that is difficult on top of it. Anything they had to figure out, where the next lesson was, when the class started, what their score was, was effort taken away from learning.
The client's brief was simple to state and hard to deliver: an application friendly enough that coaches could create and manage their own content without technical help, and simple enough that a student never had to think about the software.
The Solution
We built a single platform with two faces: a coach dashboard and a student portal, sharing one set of courses, enrolments and results underneath.
On the coach side, the centrepiece is an AI-assisted course builder. A coach gives it the topic and the level, and it drafts a structured course, modules, lessons and starting content, which the coach then edits, rewrites and publishes. Coaches upload their own material alongside it, organise everything into a learning order, schedule live classes through Zoom, create quizzes and mark assignments, all from one place and without a developer in the loop.
On the student side, we removed everything that was not the lesson. A student signs in and sees their courses, the next lesson, the next live class with a single join button, the quizzes waiting for them and the results they have earned. Nothing is hidden behind a menu, and nothing needs explaining.
Enrolment, payment, progress and marking all write to the same student record, so a coach can answer the question that used to take a spreadsheet, who is keeping up, and who is falling behind, by looking at a report.
Key Features & Modules
Everything a coach needs to teach and everything a student needs to learn, on one set of courses, enrolments and results.
AI-Driven Course Creation
Coaches generate a first draft of an entire course from a topic and a level, modules, lessons and starting content, then edit, reorder and rewrite it before publishing. It removes the blank page, which was the slowest part of producing level-appropriate English material, and leaves the teaching judgement with the coach.
Coach Content Management
Each coach has their own dashboard for uploading lessons, videos and materials, organising them into a learning sequence, updating content at any time and controlling what is published. No administrator or developer is needed to change a course.
Live Virtual Classes
Coaches schedule live sessions against a course through the platform's Zoom integration. Each enrolled student sees the class in their portal beside their recorded lessons, with one button to join. Coaches use their own Zoom accounts, so recordings and settings carry over.
Quiz Management
Coaches set quizzes against a course or an individual lesson. Objective questions are graded automatically, results are shown to the student immediately, and every attempt is stored against the student's profile so progress is visible over time.
Assignments and Marking
For work that needs a human judgement, written English, spoken recordings, longer tasks, students submit inside the platform and coaches mark it in place. Feedback stays attached to the student record instead of disappearing into email or chat.
Student Portal
One simple space per student: enrolled courses, the next lesson, upcoming live classes, quizzes due, marked assignments and results. Designed for a learner who is already working hard on the language and should not have to work on the software.
Enrolment and Payments
Students enrol and pay inside the platform, and enrolment updates itself on payment. No reconciling a payment message against a list by hand.
Progress Reporting
Coaches and the client see enrolments, completion, quiz performance and revenue in one view, so decisions about which courses to expand are based on what students actually do.
Technology & Approach
The platform is built in Node.js and React with MongoDB. React keeps both the coach dashboard and the student portal responsive as users move between lessons, quizzes and classes without full page reloads, and Node handles course delivery, enrolment, grading, scheduling and payment events on one runtime. An AI content generation service sits behind the course builder, and Zoom is integrated for live classes rather than replaced with custom video, a deliberate choice, because Zoom is reliable on ordinary connections and already familiar to coaches and students.
Our approach throughout was to take work away from the coach and decisions away from the student. Every screen was tested against a simple question: does this add to anything a language learner has to decode before they can learn?
Results & Impact
Coaches now produce a structured course in a fraction of the time it took to write one by hand, and manage every part of their teaching, content, live classes, quizzes and marking, without asking anyone for help. Students have one place to learn, with lessons, live classes and results together, and the client can see for the first time which courses are working and which students need attention.
The platform is live and in use with the client's coaches and students in Kenya.

Frequently Asked Questions
What visitors ask after reading this case study.
What is an AI-powered e-learning platform?
An AI-powered e-learning platform is an online learning system where artificial intelligence helps with the work of teaching rather than replacing the teacher. In this project the AI helps coaches draft course content - modules, lessons and starting material - from a topic and a level, which the coach then edits and publishes. Everything else a learning platform needs sits around that: live classes, quizzes, assignments, a student portal and progress reporting.
How does the platform help with the English language barrier in Kenya?
Kenya's official languages are English and Kiswahili, and many learners are more comfortable in Kiswahili or a home language than in the English used for instruction. The platform approaches that from two sides. Coaches can produce structured, level-appropriate English content quickly with AI assistance instead of writing every lesson from scratch, and students get a simple, consistent interface where the software itself never becomes an extra thing to decode. The lesson has to be the hardest part of the screen, not the app.
Can coaches create and manage their own course content?
Yes. Each coach has their own dashboard where they can generate a course draft with AI, edit or rewrite it, upload their own lessons and materials, organise everything into a learning order, schedule live classes, create quizzes and review assignments. Coaches do not need a developer or an administrator to publish or change their content.
How are live classes delivered on the platform?
Through Zoom, integrated into the platform. A coach schedules a class against a course, and it appears in each enrolled student's portal beside their recorded lessons with a single join button. We integrated Zoom rather than building custom video because it is reliable on ordinary connections, coaches and students already know it, and building live video from scratch would have added cost without adding anything a language learner needs.
How do quizzes and assessments work?
Coaches set quizzes against a course or an individual lesson. Objective questions are graded automatically and the result is shown to the student straight away and recorded against their profile. Assignments work alongside quizzes for work that needs a human judgement: the student uploads it, the coach marks it inside the platform, and the feedback stays attached to the student record rather than in an email thread.
What technology is the e-learning platform built with?
The platform is built in Node.js and React with MongoDB, with Zoom integrated for live classes and an AI content generation service behind the course builder. React keeps the student and coach interfaces responsive without full page reloads, and Node handles course delivery, enrolment, grading, scheduling and payment events on one runtime.
